Dem Strategist Needs Anonymity to Critique Clinton’s ‘Penchant for Secrecy’
The rise of anonymous quotes in political journalism has been the subject of critique and mockery for a while now — the New York Times even has a whole ombudsman-led watch devoted to it.
But it’s especially galling when the anonymous quote in question is criticizing someone else’s lack of transparency, others’ refusal to voice their critiques, or both.
Behold the key quote from The Hill’s “Hillary’s penchant for secrecy rattles Dems”:
One Democratic strategist, who asked not to be identified, complained that the email embarrassment was a by-product of “a cadre of enablers around her, and no one has the strength to say to her, ‘We can’t do this.’ ”
Perhaps the explanation for the cowardice of Clinton’s core group may be found in the fact that you can’t even comment on it without the shield of anonymity?
