Much has been made over the past few months about News Corp.’s large donations to Republican causes. A month ago, the Democratic Governors Association even filed a complaint with the Ohio Elections Commission, alleging an in-kind contribution to Ohio Republican John Kasich. Mediaite has now confirmed that the DGA has quietly withdrawn the complaint, while they are still promoting the Fox News donations.
In the past week, both the New York Times and Politico have written about the “galvanizing” momentum the DGA has received from pushing the Fox News angle. But the complaint withdrawal shows the DGA has found that there isn’t a legal problem with the donation.
From the New York Times:
“Gov. Jack Markell of Delaware, chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, said Tuesday that a $1 million contribution from Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation to help elect Republican governors had turned into “a galvanizing moment” for Democrats.
‘When we told our supporters about the Fox donation,” Mr. Markell said, ‘they exceeded that amount in small contributions to us within a matter of days.’”
The situation is slightly similar to Republican Marco Rubio‘s attempts last July to persuade contributors that Rachel Maddow was running for Senate.
