‘Despicable’: Dem Congressman Accuses Candace Owens of ‘Desecrating the Lives’ of Hate Crimes Victims
Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) levelled heavy criticism at conservative activist and discredited Hitler expert Candace Owens over her appearance at a hearing on hate crimes, saying she was “desecrating the lives” of those killed in hate crimes by politicizing the hearing.
During a House Judiciary Committee hearing on “Hate Crimes and the Rise of White Nationalism,” Cicilline criticized the minority party witnesses, Owens and Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) National President Mort Klein, for politicizing the hearing.
“I thank the chairman for convening this hearing, and regret that there are some on this panel who have tried to hijack this hearing, and desecrate the lives lost to the hate crimes and violence of white supremacists, by attempting to use this as an opportunity to promote a political position, or a political party,” Ciciline said, adding “I think that is despicable and deeply regrettable.”
Owens had used much of her testimony to attack Democrats, while Klein tok several opportunities to defend Trump.
“During the last 10 years, 76% of individuals killed by right-wing extremists were killed by white supremacists, making white supremacy the most deadly type of extremist movement in the United States over the last 10 years,” Cicilline continued. “That is a fact. And we have to do something about it. And that’s what this hearing is about.”
Owens responded several minutes later by telling the committee that Cicilline “brought up the rhetoric of the president, in the same breath that he referred to me as despicable.”
“I’m tired of hearing the left refer to people as despicable, as deplorable,” Owens continued. “We are Americans, we are patriots, and even if we disagree with you, name-calling should not be something that is done, especially in these chambers.”
