Django Unchained Actress Detained after Police Reportedly Mistake Her for Prostitute
Django Unchained actress Danièle Watts said on Facebook Friday she and her boyfriend were detained after police mistook the pair for a prostitute and john.
The pair was spotted by police kissing on a sidewalk in Studio City. Watts refused to present identification and was detained in a police car.
“As I was sitting in the back of the police car, I remembered the countless times my father came home frustrated or humiliated by the cops when he had done nothing wrong,” Watts wrote on Facebook. “I felt his shame, his anger, and my own feelings of frustration for existing in a world where I have allowed myself to believe that ‘authority figures’ could control my BEING… my ability to BE!!!!!!!”
“From the questions that he asked me as D was already on her phone with her dad, I could tell that whoever called on us (including the officers), saw a tatted RAWKer white boy and a hot bootie shorted black girl and thought we were a HO (prostitute) & a TRICK (client),” her boyfriend Brian James Lucas wrote of the incident. “What an assumption to make!!!”
According to Lucas, once police learned of Watts’ identity, she was released.
Per CBS News Los Angeles, no law requires a person to show identification to an officer, but if police have reasonable suspicion they may detain someone until ascertaining that person’s identity.
