Officials from the Department of Justice have anonymously told multiple news outlets that FBI Director James Comey was warned that sending out that letter about new pertinent emails regarding Hillary Clinton would be in violation of department policy.
One anonymously told The Washington Post, “Director Comey understood our position. He heard it from Justice leadership. It was conveyed to the FBI, and Comey made an independent decision to alert the Hill. He is operating independently of the Justice Department. And he knows it.”
They were clearly frustrated with this politically-tinged disclosure so close to election day, but as Comey explained in his internal letter yesterday, he felt it was best in the name of transparency.
There’s also this little tidbit from CNN’s report:
The officials acknowledged there was little Lynch and Yates could do given the fallout over Lynch’s controversial meeting over the summer with former President Bill Clinton.
Democrats and Republicans––including both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump themselves––have called for the FBI to release more details about what it is they’ve uncovered.
