An escort who appeared on a video claiming Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) paid her for sex has told Dominican Republic police that she was instead paid to make up the claims in a tape recording and has never met or seen the senator before, according to court documents and two people briefed on her claim.
In the original tape, as reported in The Daily Caller, two women claim they met Menendez at a Dominican resort.
Now, one of the sex workers is backing down from the claim. In an affidavit obtained by the Washington Post, one of the women on the tape claims she was videotaped without her knowledge. The Washington Post further reports that “she and a colleague were offered money by a lawyer to read from a script” implicating both Menendez and his donor, Dr. Salomon Melgen.
Melgen’s office was recently raided by the FBI in connection with a criminal fraud investigation. Menendez recently reimbursed Melgen over $50,000 for the use of his private jet for personal trips he took to the Dominican Republic.
