There was an emergency situation in Colombia today after a recreational tour boat sank with about 150 people on board.
The incident happened at the El Penol reservoir in Guatape, and an air force helicopter was dispatched to help local officials with a rescue operation. Medellin mayor Federico Gutierrez ordered a team of firefighters and scuba divers to help local sailors in the area to assist survivors.
“The most important thing right now is to save lives,” said Gutierrez.
It is not yet clear what caused the boat to sink, or how many people were killed as a result of the disaster. Early reports from CBC News indicates that at least three people are dead, and at least 30 others are currently missing.
UPDATE – 8:38 p.m. EST: Nine people have been confirmed dead.
