Massachusetts Senator and Democratic Party rock star Elizabeth Warren took her Flogging Donald Trump Like Jim Caviezel World Tour to Cincinnati Monday morning, opening up for presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton for the first time. Warren has been going at Trump for a good long while now, but the act took on a slightly different feel with Hillary Clinton standing to Warren’s left, looking on approvingly as Warren took Trump apart.
The crowd ate it up like sushi as Warren started off by turning one of Trump’s own insults against him, and went on to hurl familiar rebranding taunts like “small, insecure money-grubber,” and to call Trump a “nasty man who will never become president of the United States”:
Donald Trump says he’ll make America great again. It’s stamped right there on the front of his goofy hat. You wanna see goofy? Look at him in that hat!
Warren mixes a lot of policy contrasts into her attacks on Trump, but she also has a canny understanding of the power that President Obama used to dispose of Trump the first time around, not just to insult but to turn him into a walking punchline.
Another new ingredient in Cincinnati was Warren’s role as hype woman to Hillary’s headlining act. After another shot at Trump, Warren did something that Hillary sometimes forgets to do, and that’s let the applause breathe. Maybe a little too much, but still:
She doesn’t whine, she doesn’t run to Twitter to call her opponents “fat pigs” or “dummies.” She just remembers who needs someone on their side, and she gets up and keeps fighting for the people who need her most. [40 seconds of applause and chanting]
Warren’s appearance with Hillary on the campaign trail has only heightened the already fever pitch of speculation that the two might ticket up, with Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) the other most-bandied possibility.
