FBI: Esteban Santiago Traveled to Fort Lauderdale Specifically to Carry Out Attack

santiago-picDuring a news conference today, authorities said that the Fort Lauderdale airport shooter, Esteban Santiago, appeared to have specifically traveled there from Alaska to carry out the attack. However, they still don’t know why he chose that destination and have also not yet ruled out terrorism.

“Indications are that he came here to carry out this horrific attack,” FBI agent George Piro said. “We have not identified any triggers that would have caused this attack. We’re pursuing all angles on what prompted him to carry out this horrific attack.”

Santiago, a 26-year-old who was recently discharged from the National Guard, killed five people and injured an additional six in the mass shooting at the baggage claim. (It was originally reported as eight but authorities revised that number at the conference.) He legally checked a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun on his flight from Alaska.

Santiago spoke to the FBI in November when he walked into an office in Alaska and told them that the government was forcing him to watch ISIS propaganda videos and controlling his mind. However, despite the visit, he was not put on a no-fly list and was able to carry a gun.

It was also said at the news conference that it appears he acted alone. They are currently going through his social media accounts to find out additional information. They interviewed Santiago for several hours yesterday.

Santiago is currently in federal custody and will appear in court Monday to face federal charges.
