FBI Director James Comey Really Wants You to Tape Up That Little Webcam on Your Computer
Earlier this year, to celebrate the milestone of Instagram reaching 500 million monthly users, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg posted a highly-shared photo of himself giving thanks from the Instagram headquarters.

As users were quick to point out, the tech giant puts a piece of tape over his laptop’s webcam to prevent any third party hackers from accessing its visual capabilities. While some may think it’s an exercise in unnecessary futility, many tech experts agree that it’s not impossible for hackers to infiltrate the webcam without activating Mac’s green warning light.
And now, FBI Director James Comey not only admits that it’s a practice that he has personally taken to, but he is also now urging the American public to likewise take Zuckerberg’s lead.
Speaking Thursday to the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Comey replied “Heck yeah,” when he was asked if he covers up. “I get mocked for a lot of things,” he admitted, “but I hope people lock their cars… lock your doors at night… it’s not crazy that the FBI Director cares about personal security.”
Director Comey continued, “I think people ought to take responsibility for their own safety and security and there’s some sensible things you ought to be doing, and that’s one of them.”
One high-profile case on the subject was Luis Mijangos, who is currently behind bars after it was discovered that he hijacked more than 200 computer webcams to spy on women without their knowing of it, going as far as to subsequently blackmail many of them with the information and images he illegally obtained.
Comey said that it’s now standard practice for government officials to take this easy but necessary step. “You go into any government office and we all have the little camera things that sit on top of the screen. They all have a little lid that closes down on them. You do that so that people who don’t have authority don’t look at you. I think that’s a good thing.”
Tape up, fools!
