Fmr Secretary of State Madeleine Albright Says Trump Is Russia’s ‘Useful Idiot’
Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said that Trump fulfilled the role of a “useful idiot,” an old Soviet term for a puppet politico that could be easily manipulated.
Albright, who served under Bill Clinton, told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell on Monday afternoon that she was concerned about the provenance of the leaked emails from the Clinton campaign, which multiple intelligence agencies believe to have been stolen by hackers connected to the Russian government.
It was, she said, an unprecedented case of a foreign power “interfering in our electoral process.”
“As you well know I’ve spent a lot of my life looking what goes on in the Soviet Union and Russia,” Albright said. “This is stunning, and it is an interference in our democratic affairs. And what has happened — there’s a great term that the Soviets used to use: somebody being a ‘useful idiot.’ I think that Trump falls into that category of people that are manipulated also by the Russians, and the Russians are trying to interfere in our democracy because they don’t have one themselves.”
Trump and his supporters have repeatedly dismissed and criticized the notion that Russia is responsible for the hack or is trying to interfere in the eleciton on the GOP candidate’s behalf.
