Fran Tarkenton on Athletes Declining Trump WH Invites: ‘Nobody Boycotted Obama ‘Cause He’s Black’
Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback and self-described “big Trump guy” Fran Tarkenton criticized athletes who plan to decline White House invitations from President-elect Donald Trump by saying: “Nobody boycotted Obama because he’s black did they?”
Speaking with TMZ Sports, Tarkenton said:
“Nobody boycotted Obama because he’s black did they?” Tarkenton said. “No. They all went there because he was our President. And you respect our President. No matter whether you’re for him or not.”
Tarkenton made his comments after Cleveland Cavaliers guard Iman Shumpert told Complex that he would not visit the White House if the Cavaliers won the NBA championship and received an invitation. His teammate, LeBron James, has likewise refused to commit to attending a Trump-emceed White House ceremony.
“If they don’t want to go there, so what?” Tarkenton said. “That’s disrepectful is it not?…It’s nuts.”
The retired New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings signal caller also critcized the media for their coverage of Donald Trump.
“The media, thank God, don’t run our country,” Tarkenton said. “The media’s a bunch of hacks that write stuff.”
