Funny or Die has uncovered an old episode of the reality TV show COPS that could give some hints into what went wrong in Ferguson, Missouri last month and why the city’s African-American population was so quick to protest against the police force there after an officer shot and killed unarmed teenager Michael Brown.
“The people of Ferguson, they love the police force. It’s because we respect them, we’re professionals. Sometimes I think we respect them too much,” an officer, who looks a lot like David Koechner (Champ from Anchorman) says at one point.
Their over-the-top responses to everyday occurrences like a cat in a tree and a backyard barbecue demonstrate how things got out of hand so quickly. “A lot of cities like to use to violence as a last resort, but we’ve found it’s pretty fun to just use it as a first resort,” the officer says. “Sometimes I just point my gun at anyone walking around.”
