gawker will officially cease operation at some point next week, the site announced Thursday.

“After nearly fourteen years of operation, will be shutting down next week…” Gawker reporter J. K. Trotter posted. “Nick Denton, the company’s outgoing CEO, informed current staffers of the site’s fate on Thursday afternoon, just hours before a bankruptcy court in Manhattan will decide whether to approve Univision’s bid for Gawker Media’s other assets.”

As of yet, there has been no decision about what to do with the site’s archives, or the six other Gawker Media sites purchased by Univision, including Gizmodo, Kotaku, and Jezebel.

The decision comes after Gawker employees begged Univision not to shut the flagship site down. “We’ve heard a lot about [Univision news chief] Isaac Lee‘s commitment to fearless journalism. He has a reputation for a guy who very much buys into the idea of fearless journalism,” Gawker writer Hamilton Nolan said. “I hope he demonstrates that by keeping open.”
