Glenn Greenwald made some shocking news on Tuesday when he announced he’s leaving The Guardian for a new venture, and now Reuters is reporting that this venture is being funded by Pierre Omidyar, the founder of eBay.
Greenwald got famous overnight this year for his reporting on NSA documents leaked by whistleblower Edward Snowden, and it’s clear Omidyar has been a fan of the reporting, if these recent tweets are any indication.
Reuters cites anonymous sources close to the deal explaining Omidyar’s involvement.
Two sources familiar with the new venture said the financial backer was Omidyar. It was not immediately clear if he was the only backer or if there were other partners.
Omidyar could not immediately be reached for comment.
Omidyar, who is chairman of the board at eBay Inc but is not involved in day-to-day operations at the company, has numerous philanthropic, business and political interests, mainly through an investment entity called the Omidyar Network.
Details of what exactly this new venture is have been scarce so far.
