GOP Group Attacks Obama as ‘Anti-Religion’ for Moving U.S. Embassy in Vatican

The United States is moving its embassy in the Vatican to a larger compound that also houses the U.S. embassy to Italy for security purposes. The Vatican has downplayed any diplomatic issues that may have factored into the decision, but the National Republican Senatorial Committee has already leapt on the news to say President Obama is closing the embassy altogether as part of another “anti-religion pursuit” of the Obama administration.

The reaction to the move on the right has been quite staggering, with one former U.S. ambassador to the Vatican saying, “It’s not just those who bomb churches and kill Catholics in the Middle East who are our antagonists, but it’s also those who restrict our religious freedoms and want to close down our embassy to the Holy See.”

The NRSC then joined in, with this message getting people riled up about the closure of the Vatican embassy.

The media is reporting that President Obama plans to close the U.S. Embassy to the Vatican. This is just the latest anti-religion pursuit of this Administration, a slap in the face to Catholic-Americans around the country that weakens America’s position as a global leader.

NRSC strategist Brad Dayspring tweeted out a link to the site, leading to a heated Twitter exchange with National Journal‘s Ron Fournier.

Here’s the message as it originally appeared on the NRSC website:
