GOP Senator Under Fire for Scolding ‘Midgets’ in Congress

Republican Sen. Bob Corker has come under fire for using the word “midget” while scolding his colleagues in the Senate.

The Tennessee lawmaker used the word shortly before a Senate Banking Committee vote on Tuesday. “I’m sorry it just feels like a bunch of midgets up here worrying about some CBO issue,” he said in response to some of his colleagues allowing Congressional Budget Office scores to play a strong role in policy decisions.

In response, Little People of America — a dwarfism advocacy group — lamented the senator’s use of the “slur” and slammed it as “embarrassing and insulting.”

“Today, no matter in what context it is used, the word dehumanizes and objectifies people of short stature,” Little People of America President Gary Arnold said, according to POLITICO.

Corker, for his part, apologized Thursday afternoon. “I sincerely apologize for what was a poor word choice and in no way meant to offend anyone,” he said.
