Harry Reid: Robert Gates ‘Out to Make a Buck’ By Trashing Me, Obama Admin.
As he made the media rounds to promote his new book, former Defense Secretary Robert Gates called out Senator Harry Reid for his “disgraceful” comments about the Iraq War years ago. Reid responded in an interview with the Associated Press, accusing Gates of being “out to make a buck” by trashing people and ginning up controversy over his book.
Gates’ book contains excerpts that say less-than-flattering things about President Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and specially Vice President Joe Biden, so Reid was rather bothered by how much Gates appeared to “denigrate” all of those people in his book, himself included.
Reid said he has not discussed the book with Obama but has spoken with Biden about it. “We just lamented how disappointed we were,” he said. “It’s obvious it’s to sell a book.”
The Nevada Democrat said in brief comments in his Capitol office that he hasn’t read the book and doesn’t intend to, but knows what Gates wrote from conversations with others. “I’m surprised he would in effect denigrate everybody he came in contact with in an effort to make a buck,” he said.
In his book, Gates refers to Reid a few times in a less-than-positive light, recalling how Reid solicited him as a potential running mate for Obama in 2008 and came away from that conversation wondering if Reid was being funny or “if he was delusional.”
