HBO Nixes Plans For Roger Ailes Movie Due To CNN Conflict

As we reported earlier Thursday, HBO was reportedly pursuing a film about Roger Ailes, based on a manuscript by Gabriel Sherman and executive produced by MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough.

Deadline Hollywood has now updated the story, reporting that HBO has actually canceled the movie plans.

HBO Films President Len Amato emailed Deadline, saying that:

“We recently decided not to pursue the Ailes project. It had become clear to us before even receiving a script that due to our company’s CNN affiliation the film could never be seen as objective.”

“HBO was trying hard to keep the project under wraps,” one of the dealmakers told Deadline. A source had originally told the publication that with this movie, “HBO prefers to take on Fox News through Ailes. The idea is that it should make Fox News look like a Mafia, and you get into this through Ailes, sidestepping Murdoch, not approaching the story head on.”
