Putative Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton is expected to do something Wednesday for which many in the political press corps have waited with baited breath: make an actual specific policy proposal.
Via CNN’s Brianna Keilar, “Hillary Clinton will call for every police department in the country to use body cameras to ‘increase transparency and accountability,’ as she pushes for broad criminal justice reform during a speech in New York on Wednesday.”
A Clinton aide told Keilar the candidate is expected to discuss “the hard truth and fundamental unfairness in our country that today African American men are far more likely to be stopped and searched by police, charged with crimes and sentenced to longer prison terms.”
Clinton tweeted about the unrest in Baltimore last night, and spoke off-record at a donor dinner, saying “Baltimore is burning,” but also calling for the restoration of order.
The call for body cameras have induced an unusual amount of bipartisan agreement, with pundits on both sides of the aisle breaking bread on Sunday shows, Al Sharpton, former NYPD commissioner Ray Kelly coming together on the issue, and now Clinton and conservative Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) both calling for them on the same day.
