Congressman Eric Swalwell stopped by the set of Morning Joe Tuesday to offer his assessment of the growing swirl of controversy surrounding his colleague, Representative Devin Nunes. Nunes, a California Republican and chair of the House Intelligence Committee, has faced growing calls to recuse himself from the committee after briefing the president on classified intelligence information.
“You can take up golfing now because there’s sure not going to be an investigation in the House,” mocked Joe Scarborough.
“It’s time for Devin Nunes to leave this investigation,” said Swalwell. “He should be gone.” Swalwell then said revelations that Nunes was on White House grounds to receive classified intelligence material also seemed suspicious.
“We could receive at the capitol, we have our own secure facility,” said Nunes. “This is what a cover-up to a crime looks like. We are watching it play out now.”
“Is the investigation over?” asked show contributor Mike Barnicle.
“It’s been compromised,” said Swalwell who said he was now calling for an “independent commission.”
Despite the growing pressure, Nunes has so far refused to leave his post. During an appearance on The O’Reilly Factor Monday night, Nunes held firm. House Speaker Paul Ryan also voiced his “full confidence” in Nunes’ ability to stay on as chair.
