While the eyes of the political world have been on Alabama for weeks, closely watching the Senate race between Republican Roy Moore and Democrat Doug Jones, most of that state’s residents have been focused on much weightier matters.

The Iron Bowl.

There is no college football rivalry quite like it. On Saturday, the battle is renewed between No. 1 Alabama and No. 6 Auburn, with the latter hosting at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Questions abound about the Crimson Tide, who have blown through an unusually weak schedule. Their signature win, to date, is a squeaker on the road against 8-4 Mississippi State. Yes, there was a solid victory over LSU, and they survived a trip to College Station turning back Texas A&M. But how good is Alabama, really? We should get some answers over the next two weeks, as the Crimson Tide, with a win Saturday, will take on Georgia for the SEC Championship, and a spot in the college football playoff.

If the Crimson Tide lose, however, Auburn will get the shot at playing Georgia next week in Atlanta —

in what would be a rematch of their showdown of two weeks ago, which the Tigers won. Auburn has rallied from an early-season loss to Clemson and an October setback in Death Valley against LSU to play themselves back into position for the SEC crown an perhaps even a playoff berth. Two wins ought to be enough for the Tigers to make the four-team field.

But the playoff, really, is secondary. For these two schools, it’s all about the Iron Bowl.

Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m. ET. CBS will broadcast the game live. Brad Nessler has the call along with Gary Danielson.
