Hundreds of Writers, Including Stephen King and Amy Tan, Write Open Letter Opposing Trump
Hundreds and hundreds of authors and other writers have signed onto an open letter declaring their fierce opposition to Donald Trump.
The gigantic list includes Stephen King, Amy Tan, Daniel Handler (a.k.a. Lemony Snicket), Cheryl Strayed, Junot Díaz, D.A. Powell, etc.
In the open letter, all these writers declare that “language can be abused in the name of power” and reflect on “the history of dictatorship” and demagoguery.
They all say that they’re standing in fierce opposition to Trump because he’s just too dangerous:
Because neither wealth nor celebrity qualifies anyone to speak for the United States, to lead its military, to maintain its alliances, or to represent its people;
Because the rise of a political candidate who deliberately appeals to the basest and most violent elements in society, who encourages aggression among his followers, shouts down opponents, intimidates dissenters, and denigrates women and minorities, demands, from each of us, an immediate and forceful response;
For all these reasons, we, the undersigned, as a matter of conscience, oppose, unequivocally, the candidacy of Donald J. Trump for the Presidency of the United States.
Signatories have set up a petition site encouraging more people to sign their names to the letter.
