‘I Get That That’s a Cute Question’: Spicer Responds on Whether He Believes Trump’s Wiretap Claims
During today’s White House press briefing — the first full briefing in over a week — White House press secretary Sean Spicer was asked by ABC’s Jonathan Karl about President Donald Trump’s tweets where he claimed former President Barack Obama had wiretapped his phones prior to the election.
In response to Karl asking if the White House has provided evidence to back up Trump’s assertion, Spicer pointed out that he has put out a statement and there would be no further comment.
When pressed on if the president has asked FBI director James Comey on whether there was a wiretap ordered, Spicer stated that Trump “has not” and that there’s “clearly a role” for Congress to play. “That’s the appropriate place for this to handle,” Spicer added.
Finally, Karl directly asked Spicer if he believed Obama ordered a wiretap.
“I get that that’s a cute question to ask,” the press sec replied. “My job is to represent the president and talk about what he’s doing and what he wants and he’s made very clear what his goal is.”
