‘I Have a Little Conflict of Interest’: Trump Friendship With Turkey Now Makes a Lot More Sense
Recently, President Donald Trump came under a bit of fire over his congratulatory phone call to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after winning a referendum that will greatly expand his powers in the country. Outside of weakening Turkey’s parliamentary government while handing more control to one person, election observers claim that voting irregularities bring into question the legitimacy of the election itself.
In the wake of his back-patting to Erdogan, some of Trump’s past comments about his business ties to Turkey have come to light, placing his call to the Turkish president into a whole new context.
In December 2015, months after Trump announced his candidacy for president, the then-real estate mogul appeared on then-Breitbart News chief Steve Bannon’s radio show and noted that when it came to dealing with Turkey as POTUS, he may have a bit of a problem.
“I have a little conflict of interest,” Trump stated. “Because I have a major, major building in Istanbul. It’s a tremendously successful job. It’s called Trump Towers — two towers, instead of one, not the usual one, it’s two.”
The Morning Joe crew played that portion of the interview on today’s broadcast. After listening to the audio, co-host Joe Scarborough observed that it is unbelievable that something like this would be in such plain sight.
“It’s like a Perry Mason episode,” he exclaimed. “Evidence never lines up like that. Why do they make it so unrealistic? Donald Trump would never be admitting he has a conflict of interest with an autocrat to Steve Bannon!”
Oh yeah, by the way, back in 2012 and 2013, both he and his daughter Ivanka Trump sent out tweets highlighting the opening of a new Trump Tower in Turkey.
I am in Istanbul,Turkey. Just opened magnificent #TrumpTowers— a big hit.
