While McCain didn’t specifically mention President Donald Trump’s combative and contentious conversation with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in his statement, it was definitely clear it was the impetus behind his call to the ambassador.
It was reported that Trump slammed Turnbull over an agreement reached between the two countries in which America would take in 1,250 refugees. POTUS also used the call to brag about the size of his Electoral College win, told Turnbull that “this was the worst call by far” with foreign leaders, and abruptly ended the conversation after 25 minutes despite the call scheduled to go for an hour.
