Planking and the Ice Bucket Challenge can step aside, because the Internet’s new obsession is here, and it’s called the Mannequin Challenge.
If you’ve taken a break recently and randomly browsed around on social media, you might have noticed an unusual amount of videos showing people frozen in place. That would be because the Mannequin Challenge literally requires you to do absolutely nothing.
Participants gather together in one place, usually to depict a certain scenario or elaborate pose, and they stand still as any mannequin would. The meme is complete when someone films the participants and turns their environment into a big snapshot. Fox’s Shep Smith might very well be the latest public figure to get in on the action, when he pulled it off on his Monday show.
CNN says that the trend started with in October with a group of students at Edward H. White High School.

If you’re curious about the song by the way, “Black Beatles” by Rae Sremmurd seems to be the most popular song used among challengers. Want to take the challenge on your own? Get your friends together and let’s see what you’ve got.
