Is the Ellen Oscar Selfie Actually Worth a Billion Dollars?

Believe it or not, that Ellen DeGeneres Oscars selfie might actually be worth a billion dollars. Now, that sounds like an obscene amount of money, but remember, it was at the Oscars both Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lawrence were in it, so it was clearly a good day for Samsung. (The whole thing ended up being ad placement for Samsung anyway.)

Maurice Levy, the CEO of ad firm Publicis, spoke to a crowd at the MIPTV marketing event this week and said that the selfie is worth somewhere between 800 million and one billion dollars. Wow.

Levy claimed credit for not just that photo, but for the White House selfie that caused a stir for also being promoted by Samsung. The Ellen selfie did monstrously well on social media, reaching millions and millions of people, as it quickly raced to become the most retweeted tweet in the history of tweets. 37 million people saw all the Oscars tweets, a number not far off from the 43 million that watched the actual awards ceremony.
