ISIS Leader Emerges in New Video, Draws Criticism for ‘Flashy’ Wristwatch

Authorities in Iraq said Monday video had emerged that appeared to show self-proclaimed ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi preaching to Sunni extremists in Mosul, a large Iraqi city recently captured by the insurgent group.

If the video does in fact show Baghdadi, it would be the first public appearance of the man who has anointed himself head of an Iraqi-Syrian caliphate. Baghdadi, who has led the splinter group ISIS on a rampage across Iraq that threatens the unstable democracy, has a $10 million U.S. bounty on his head.

Baghdadi calls for jihad and strict adherence to Muslim law. But despite his pious black robe and turban, Baghdadi has drawn criticism for his chrome wristwatch — “believed to be either a Rolex, Sekonda or £3,500 Omega seamaster” — which detractors are calling “flashy.” Can’t win for losing.
