Mike Huckabee tried to one-up Donald Trump on the controversial statements platform by arguing on Monday that President Obama‘s deal with Iran would lead Israel “to the doors of the oven.” Fellow politicians and media figures have all weighed in on his Holocaust reference, including Israeli Ambassador to the United States Ron Dermer, who found the comment to be less-than-appropriate.
In an interview with USA Today, Dermer said that even though the Israeli government and the Obama Administration have a disagreement on a significant security issue, he believes that Obama is doing what he thinks is best for both countries.
“Where we disagree is the judgment of actually what this deal is going to do,” Dermer said. “We think it’s going to endanger Israel and make our region much less secure. We do not in any way impugn the motives of the people who are doing this deal.”
When asked whether Huckabee ought to take back his words, Dermer said that it was up to the governor, but added, “These were not words that I would use, or I think, are appropriate.”
