White House spokesman Josh Earnest expressed gratitude Wednesday for now-former Secret Service Director Julia Pierson shortly after she resigned from her post. CNN’s Jake Tapper thought that was a little uncouth.
“Always a weird passive-aggressive dance when a spokesman praises the heck out of someone just fired,” Tapper said on Twitter.
Earlier in the week Pierson faced a series of hostile questions from members of Congress during a hearing related to a series of recent White House security breaches.
Earnest said Pierson had “accepted responsibility” for “shortcomings” at the Secret Service.
“That quite simply, I think, is a testament to her professionalism and her character,” said Earnest.
“The media has made it clear that this is what they expected,” Pierson said in an interview with Bloomberg News following her resignation.
