In his opening statement at today’s House Intelligence Committee hearing into Russian interference into the presidential election, FBI Director James Comey acknowledged that there is an open FBI investigation into any possible coordination between the Russian government and campaign of Donald Trump.
“I have been authorized by the Department of Justice to confirm that the FBI, as part of our counterintelligence mission, is investigating the Russian government’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election,” Comey stated. “And that includes the investigation of any links between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia’s efforts.”
He also noted that because it is an open investigation that he cannot say more about what the agency is doing and “whose conduct” they are examining. Acknowledging that not being able to go into details may be frustrating to many, Comey said that it is “the way it has to be.”
