This morning the Drudge Report ran a story saying that President Obama told a top fundraiser in private that he believes Mitt Romney will choose CIA director and former general David Petraeus as his vice presidential running mate. White House press secretary Jay Carney denied the claim to reporters today, dismissing it “with absolute confidence that such an assertion has never been uttered by the president.”
Petraeus’ name has been thrown out in the past few months as a long-shot nominee for the number two spot on the Republican ticket. Reporters asked Carney today if Obama had ever made any such comment about Petraeus to a fundraiser this week.
“I can say with absolute confidence that such an assertion has never been uttered by the president,” White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters, after chuckling at the report.
“Be mindful of your sources,” Carney said.
Philip Klein at the Washington Examiner highlights an exchange Petraeus had with reporters in 2010, adamantly denying he had any ambitions to run for political office, going so far as to say, ” I’ve tried quoting the country song, ‘What Part of No Don’t You Understand?’”
