Vice President Joe Biden has that big reputation for blunt talk for a reason, and his new interview with the L.A. Times on the Democrats’ 2016 failures shows why.
The veep actually said that he doesn’t think Hillary Clinton “ever really figured… out” why it is she wanted to run in the first place. He surmised, “She thought she had no choice but to run. That, as the first woman who had an opportunity to win the presidency, I think it was a real burden on her.”
Biden also reiterated his belief that his own party did not do enough to reach out to the white working class, and he again defended them from some of the stereotypes:
“They’re all the people I grew up with. They’re their kids. And they’re not racist. They’re not sexist. But we didn’t talk to them.”
He said that Democrats were not letting a lot of people know “that we understood their problems,” and he even attributed that to a creeping “elitism” in the Democratic party.
Biden does not subscribe to the theory that his party shouldn focus on economics at the expense of “identity politics,” but at the same time, he added, “You can’t eat equality.”
