Donald Trump has been taking heat for his insistence that if Hillary Clinton wins Pennsylvania (which Democrats have done every election since the 1980s), it will be because she cheated. By some accounts, this is a dog-whistle of sorts that indicates to Trump’s supporters that they should brace for a Pennsylvania loss and question the foundations of American democracy when that loss comes.
John Oliver listened when Trump said he was enlisting people to “election observers.” He went to Trump’s website to sign up, just to see what would happen. Here is what happened:
He got an email that said, “We are going to do everything we are legally allowed to do to stop Crooked Hillary from rigging this election.”
Well, the thing is, it’s illegal to intimidate voters. Stationing hawkish fans at precincts might just count as voter intimidation. Essentially, the Democrats sued the Republicans over an almost identical incident in 1982, and the RNC had to create a document that outlined all of the ways it would no longer tolerate intimidation, according to the Washington Post.
Oliver tore Trump apart for not knowing what is legal and illegal to begin with, let alone as laws relate to the intimidation of voters in the name of preventing voter fraud. Watch above.
