ABC’s Jonathan Karl put White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest on the spot today over whether President Obama will seek Congressional authorization to expand his campaign against ISIS. And he did so by asking Earnest for a straight-up “yes or no,” which Earnest did not oblige him on.
Earnest pointed out that Obama was asked this question, to which Karl said, “And he didn’t give a direct answer either.” He pressed Earnest on whether Obama would go to Congress. Earnest said nothing definitive, because, he explained, “these are the kind of questions best answered” after Obama makes some decisions on what he thinks is best to do.
Karl brought up last year’s spat over Obama potentially going around Congress to act in Syria (which he didn’t in the end). Earnest argued this is different because the ISIS threat is “directly related to the protection of American citizens in the region” and Obama believes he has the authority to do what needs to be done to protect the United States.
