Now that Justice Stevens has confirmed that he is considering announcing his retirement (perhaps within the month!) the speculation about replacements has begun in earnest. Bloomberg published a list of three possible nominees, including two women and no doubt this is just the beginning of a lot of SCOTUS gaming to come.
Considering the trouble President Obama and the Dems had getting the health care bill through, and the threats of further non-cooperation that followed…well, one wonders how much trouble Obama might have getting his Supreme Court nominee approved. Judging from Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl’s appearance on Fox News Sunday this morning, it’s likely not going to be a walk in the park.
Kyl says he doesn’t want Obama’s nominee to come in with “pre-conceived attitudes…we’ve had too much of that.” Kyl also expressed his hope that Obama doesn’t nominate an “overly ideological person” saying that as long as he doesn’t do this Kyl doesn’t envision Republicans engaging in a filibuster. So! Only hurdle now is getting both sides of the aisle to agree on what constitutes an “overly ideological person.” Piece of cake. Video below.
