When Andy Samberg left the cast of Saturday Night Live in 2012, he took the show’s incredibly popular “Digital Shorts” franchise with him. Now, it looks like Samberg and his Lonely Island crew — Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone — will get a chance to bring their unique brand of hip hop comedy to the big screen in a new film produced by Judd Apatow.
Variety is reporting that Universal Pictures is developing an untitled movie that will star the three members of The Lonely Island. Schaffer and Taccone are set to co-direct and Apatow will serve as an executive producer.
Unlike the rest of SNL’s content, The Lonely Island’s digital shorts live on the group’s YouTube channel, which boasts more than 5.8 million subscribers. Their most popular video, “I Just Had Sex” featuring Akon, has been viewed nearly 220 million times. They first burst onto the scene with “Lazy Sunday” on SNL all the way back in 2005 and have since put out three albums, Incredibad, Turtleneck & Chain and The Wack Album.
No word yet on the inevitable Justin Timberlake cameo in the upcoming film:
