Karl Lagerfeld Slams Newsweek: Sorry That Tina Brown Has To Go Down With The ‘Sh*tty Little Paper’
Looks like Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld is holding a bit of a grudge. Back in January, a Newsweek piece stated, among other things, that Lagerfeld is overrated. Asked about the story during a press conference on Friday, Lagerfeld slammed the publication, saying he feels sorry that Tina Brown “go down with a shitty little paper like this.”
Women’s Wear Daily reports that Lagerfeld covered a wide array of topics during the nearly hour-long conference. It was toward the end when a reporter from Indonesia asked about the Newsweek story. From WWD:
“First of all, Tina Brown’s magazine is not doing well at all,” he said before ripping into the credibility of the story. “She is dying,” he continued. “I’m sorry for Tina Brown, who was such a success at ‘Vanity Fair,’ to go down with a shitty little paper like this. I’m sorry.”
Yikes. New York Magazine‘s fashion blog The Cut notes that the Newsweek piece in question, written by Robin Givhan, was a “thoughtful and well-researched piece of journalism” that “also said numerous positive things about the designer.” Nonetheless, the remarks had cost Givhan her “usual front-row spot” at the Chanel show.
