Kasich Tries to Reach Out to Latinos by Reminding People to Always Leave a ‘Little Tip’
Unfortunately, the presidential candidate ended up insulting them instead, stereotyping Latinos as hotel maids and service workers.
“A lot of them do jobs that they’re willing to do, and that’s why in the hotel, you leave a little tip,” Kasich said.
Kasich also reportedly went on to talk about a note he once received from a maid in Los Angeles, where the Ohio governor said it was the “greatest thing” that she cared about his visit.
“We can learn a lot and she’s Hispanic, ’cause I didn’t know it at the time, but I met her in the hallway -– asked her if I could get a little more soap,” Kasich said, reportedly chuckling as he did so.
Jorge-Mario Cabrera, of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, took issue by saying the comment showed a disregard for the importance of immigrants, while labeling them as “the help.”
“Most candidates have lopsided, stereotypical ideas about immigrants, which include the sense that immigrants, especially undocumented immigrants, are only good while serving others,” Cabera said.
Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton responded to the controversy with a tweet in Spanish that roughly translates to: “Another product of the Party of Trump — John Kasich. Talking about Latinos doesn’t only mean talking about tips.”
