Kathy Griffin is speaking out following the shocking photo of her posing with a severed head made to look like President Donald Trump.
In an interview with Yashar Ali published on New York magazine’s website Monday morning, the comic claimed that CNN head Jeff Zucker limited her to four Trump jokes during the 2017 version of the network’s annual New Year’s broadcast. Griffin says that Zucker told her he feared retribution from the man who was then President-elect.
“I don’t need this, you don’t need this,” Zucker said, according to Griffin. “He’s come after me harder than anybody. I have to deal with this guy.”
Griffin added that she questions the need for repeated public apologies — given tweets from Trump himself in which he degrades politicians and others.
“Why are people still expecting me to apologize and grovel to a man that tweets like this?” Griffin said. “I’m a comedian; he’s our f*cking president.”
“President Trump just pardoned Joe Arpaio, who was essentially running a concentration camp in the Arizona desert,” she said. “[Trump] said there are some good Nazis, and he’s kicking out young adults who were brought here as kids by their parents, and I’m the one who has to continue to apologize?”
