Kitzhaber Resignation Means U.S. Will Have First Openly Bisexual Governor

The resignation of Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber has one unintended consequence: the United States will have its first openly bisexual governor in history.

Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown will succeed Kitzhaber as governor, and Brown has publicly come out as bisexual in the past and has publicly discussed her coming out.

In one such recollection, Brown said, “I believe it was during my early 30’s that I figured out who, or what, I am. But it wasn’t until it was written in the Oregonian newspaper that I was bisexual that I had to face the inevitable and let those around me know. Thus began my very public coming out as a bisexual.”

Brown would technically be the first openly LGBT governor in the country, because the only other such governor, New Jersey’s Jim McGreevey, only came out as gay during his resignation speech when he admitted to having an affair with another man.

Brown currently lives in Portland with her husband Dan and her stepkids Dylan and Jessie.
