Kurt Eichenwald Says on GMA: Trump Supporters Are ‘Loading Up My Twitter Feed’ to Inflict Harm
It’s no secret by now that Newsweek political journalist Kurt Eichenwald said last week that he was taking a social media hiatus. The reason?
In addition to allegedly getting hammered by a large number of Twitter trolls, one particular user — with the anti-Semetic handle “@jew_goldstein” — sent Eichenwald a strobing gif over the words “You deserve a seizure for your posts.” Eichenwald has been very open about his battles with epilepsy in the past, and argues that his firm coverage of Donald Trump‘s candidacy has caused Trump supporters to target the journalist directly.
Eichenwald sat down with George Stephanopoulos on Good Morning America Tuesday to discuss the incident as well as the potential legal ramifications that will come from it. “Your memory gets pretty obliterated,” Eichenwald said about the moment after he suffered a seizure from the Tweet last week.
Eichenwald said that Trump supporters have been “loading up my Twitter feed,” with hateful and damaging Tweets aimed at causing problems for the journalist; the situation has gotten so out of hand, argues Eichenwald, that he can’t look at Twitter any longer.
“It is amazing that simply because I am a political reporter,” he told Stephanopoulos, “that we have become so sick and twisted in this country that people think they have the right and obligation to inflict very serious injury.”
The Newsweek writer said he is going after the person in question with legal action. “We’re gonna have subpoenas going out to them soon,” he said on GMA. Eichenwald went on a long Twitter rant last week about the incident, calling the “@jew_goldstein” account a “deplorable,” writing “Online anonymity does not protect criminals. Thats why subpoenas exist.”
