Just two days after the deadly massacre at a gay night club in Orlando that left 49 dead and dozens more injured, a Fox News anchor departed from typically conservative rhetoric to voice her opinion against assault weapons.
“Yes,” Gretchen Carlson said Tuesday, “the Orlando massacre was terror. But there’s no doubt that Omar Mateen was able to kill so many people because he was firing an AR-15, a military style assault weapon, a weapon easier to buy in the state of Florida than buying a handgun.”
Although Carlson still championed the liberties guaranteed by the Bill of Rights’ second amendment, it was a notably different line than those said by her Fox News cohorts. And Comedy Central’s Larry Wilmore took notice, too. The host of the Nightly Show noted Thursday that Carlson, “…kinda went off script.”
“By the way, Fox News employees, swing by Buffalo Wild Wings tonight for Gretchen Carlson’s farewell party,” he joked. “I’m telling you — there’s no way Fox is keeping her after that!”
To illustrate his point further and celebrate the more typically liberal point of view that Carlson bravely shared on conservative airwaves this week, Wilmore presented the “MSNBC Starter Pack.” And in too-perfect fashion, the kit includes, “…the short androgynous brunette wig, black glasses, and a Ta-Nehisi Coates book.”
