Leaked DNC Emails Reveal Discussions About Attacking Bernie Sanders’ Religion
Leaked emails reveal how top officials at the DNC discussed undermining Bernie Sanders‘ campaign during the Democratic primary, specifically by trying to push a narrative about the senator’s religion or lack thereof.
In an email dated May 5, DNC CFO Brad Marshall apparently floats the idea of trying to raise Sanders’ potential atheism. The email does not mention Sanders by name. The email says, “It might may no difference, but for KY and WVA can we get someone to ask his belief. Does he believe in a God. He had skated on saying he has a Jewish heritage. I think I read he is an atheist. This could make several points difference with my peeps. My Southern Baptist peeps would draw a big difference between a Jew and an atheist.”
In a subsequent email on the same thread, Marshall wrote simply, “It’s these Jesus thing.”
Sanders trounced Clinton in West Virginia and narrowly lost Kentucky.
Sanders has spoken of being “culturally Jewish,” and has often framed his “spiritual” leanings in terms of a belief that human beings need to look out for each other.
The missive is one of a cache of 19,252 emails and 8,034 attachments from top DNC officials that were reportedly hacked by someone calling himself Guccifer 2.0 and released onto Wikileaks Friday morning. The emails cover the time period between Jan. 2015 and May 25 of this year.
