French authorities are handling a situation today at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), where a person was injured due to an apparent letter bomb.
Paris police have told the media that an investigation is underway after a person was hurt by an explosion that happened while they were opening a package; the victim’s injuries were reportedly minor. Authorities have taken action around the IMF and the nearby offices of the World Bank.
“I condemn this cowardly act of violence and reaffirm the IMF’s resolve to continue our work in line with our mandate,” said IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde. “We are working closely with the French authorities to investigate this incident and ensure the safety of our staff.”
It is not yet clear who sent the letter, though the investigation is still concentrated around central Paris. It is currently unknown whether this incident has any connection to a recent development where explosive materials were sent to Germany’s Finance Ministry before they were destroyed in a controlled detonation.
