LISTEN: L.A. Clippers Owner Allegedly Goes on Racist Rant
L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling allegedly went on a racist rant to his girlfriend in audio picked up by TMZ today. Allegedly Sterling tells V. Stiviano repeatedly that he’s very bothered by her public association with a number of black individuals, including Magic Johnson, ordering her never to bring black people to any of his games.
Sterling says he has nothing against minorities, but doesn’t want her to publicly “broadcast that you’re associating with black people.” He shouts, “In your lousy fucking Instagrams you don’t have to have yourself with––walking with black people.”
Stiviano brings up Magic Johnson and explains that she just admires him. Sterling admires him too, but not enough to let her publicly associate with him.
“It’s too bad you can’t admire him privately, and during your entire fucking life, your whole life, admire him, bring him here, feed him, fuck him, I don’t care! You can do anything. But don’t put him on an Instagram for the world to have to see so they have to call me. And don’t bring him to my games, okay?”
The reaction to the leaked audio was swift. The NBA issued a statement saying the comments are “disturbing and offensive,” and they’re conducting an investigation into the matter. Johnson also reacted, expressing shock that Sterling, who he considered to be a friend, would say things like that.
Al Sharpton also weighed in, telling TMZ, “No one should be allowed to own a team if they have in fact engaged in this kind of racial language.” Sharpton says if immediate action isn’t taken, he’s prepared to set up rallies in front of the NBA headquarters.
