Long Island Man Shoots Girlfriend After She Dismisses His Belief That Zombie Apocalypse Might Happen

A Long Island man obsessed with The Walking Dead attempted to turn his girlfriend into the non-walking dead after she dismissed his belief that the zombie apocalypse was a real possibility.

The Daily News reports that, according to authorities, 26-year-old Long Islander Jared Gurman allegedly shot his 27-year-old girlfriend, Jessica Gelderman, in the back with a .22-caliber rifle after the two argued over the popular zombie-themed AMC series The Walking Dead.

In a news conference, Detective Lt. Raymond Cote explained that the violence resulted from Gelderman dismissing Gurman’s belief that the zombie apocalypse could happen: “He felt very adamant there could be a military mishap that would result in some sort of virus being released that could cause terrible things to happen. She felt it was ridiculous. He’s passionate about it. And it escalated from there.”

After the pair had a heated argument on the subject, Gelderman decided to leave, but the debate reportedly continued into the early morning hours, via text. Upon returning to Gurman’s house around 2:30 a.m., he was waiting with a rifle.

Cote reported that Gelderman tried to defuse her boyfriend’s anger, but he fired one round into her back as she walked up a stairway.

CBS 2 News reports that Gelderman suffered a shattered rib, a pierced lung, a pierced diaphram. She is in serious but stable condition.
