CNN’s Jake Tapper joined Bill Maher on his show tonight to discuss the ongoing war between President Trump and the press, CNN in particular.
Tapper told Maher that while lying in Washington is not a new thing, “I’ve never really seen this level of falsehood just quantitatively.” He said it’s gone from things like “if you like your doctor you can keep your doctor” to “conspiracy theories based on nothing.”
He discussed some of Trump’s attacks that have bothered him the most, including his infamous comments about John McCain‘s war hero status. He did tell Maher that a lot of Trump’s voters didn’t want him to be president because of those things, but in spite of them.
Maher also asked Tapper, “Do you think that cable news––and CNN, which you’re a part of––is somewhat complicit in putting him in the White House?”
He pointed to the almost non-stop way cable news covered him “like he was already the president” and told Tapper that cable news in general made “way too big a thing of Hillary’s emails, the Clinton Foundation, all this bullshit.”
Tapper acknowledged that the criticism of covering all Trump rallies is fair, but pointed to tough interviews he and others on CNN conducted with both Clinton and Trump.
