Matthew McConaughey Invokes True Detective Character in Bizarre Car Ad

If you thought you had seen the last of Matthew McConaughey’s Rust Cohle when he limped off into the moonlight with Woody Harrelson’s Marty Hart at the end of True Detective’s first season, think again. While he may not identify himself by name, McConaughey’s iconic character makes an unmistakable appearance in a new series of car commercials for Lincoln, directed by Drive’s Nicolas Winding Refn.

In the most True Detective-esque new spot, McConaughey sits behind the wheel of his Lincoln SUV, face-to-face with a massive bull in the middle of road. Just as Cohle would sit in the car next to Hart and philosophize about time being a flat circle, McConaughey stares straight at that bull and shares his cryptic thoughts with the world.

“I think that’s old Cyrus,” he says. “Eighteen-hundred pounds of do-whatever-the-heck-I-want. I can respect that. Take the long way, huh?”

Even the creep-tastic music in the background screams True Detective. It seems the Lincoln company misses HBO’s award-winning miniseries even more than the rest of America.
